Torre

The Tower

For the small community of San Vincenza, the Tower is of particular importance. The people of San Vincenzo, after the destruction of their castle (1304), were relocated to some hovels built by the People's Council of Pisa near this building. And since then, the Tower has been the political, economic, and defensive centre of San Vincenzo through the centuries.

Why visit the tower

Inside you can admire a permanent exhibition on the history of the Tower. In the 14th century, it was the seat of the notary and vicar of Pisa, who were sent there to control the counties of Donoratico, Castagneto, Segalari and Bolgheri. While, during the following century, the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore used the adjacent pier to transport the Campigliese marble used to build Florence Cathedral.

In the Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, there is a painting by Giorgio Vasari dedicated to the famous battle fought near the Tower
